4th Grade:
- Cursive letter g
- introduction of the v_e exception which says the short sound I as in give. In the English language the letter v never ends a word. It is always followed by a silent e, but the silent e with the letter v can have 2 jobs. One is the premise of the v_e syllable-the silent e makes the vowel long. The second is to be a "buddy" to v at the end of the word which does not change the vowel. In the case of words like live and live, the e at the end performs both tasks and one must use the context that the word is in to determine if it is live-I want to live in Austin, or live-They gave away live fish at the carnival.
